Just this April, more than a dozen people were rushed to the hospital and given precautionary measures after they were exposed to a harmful chemical: phenol. The substance was accidentally spilled at the Lakeview Family Medicine and Urgent Care in West Des Moines. Phenol is an extremely harmful chemical used as an antimicrobial and antipruritic agent in health care facilities. It can cause serious harm to the eyes, respiratory tract, and most particularly to the skin, as this is the primary point of entry of this chemical. The phenol fumes could have been prevented from spilling if the storage modular tanks containing it had a secondary containment tank, a barrier between the primary tank and the surrounding environment. The healthcare facility should invest in this equipment to prevent the incident from occurring again. However, they must choose a containment tank from a highly reputable company, like ModuTank, Inc.
